Company: The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation

How This Grant Works:
The recent recession has led many business leaders and economists to call for a retooling of the American economy, especially in places particularly hard hit like Michigan. To qualify, you must be:
- Over the next year, the grantee will conduct research, engage in policy work, and develop best practices designed to advance the next economy in Michigan and the Great Lakes region.
Expires: June 30, 2012

Improving Credit History
Banks rely on past credit histories for two main reasons:
1) It minimizes their time in selecting borrowers. Banks want to put money out; they don't want to waste time on borrowers who have no chance of getting approved. Thus, a quick pull of past credit histories can show which borrowers the bank (loan officer) should be spending their time on.
2) Past credit histories show both the risk associated with each borrower as well as debt-to-income ratios - all important in the underwriting decision.
Thus, the more creditworthy borrowers there are, the better it is for these lending institutions.
To help potential borrowers better understand and manager their personal credit history, Bank of America has created a grant program for non-profit credit counseling agencies.
