5 Tips to Help Small Business Owners

If you own a small business, you know what it is like to wear many hats at the same time. As a small business owner, you manage all the finances, marketing, computer systems, product development, client relations and everything else that comes with running a company. Sometimes it feels like a thankless job, but the benefits can be huge, and there is nothing like a sense of ownership when things are working well and firing on all cylinders.

  • #1 – Learn to Delegate

No one person can be all things at all times. If you have staff available, then learn to use their strengths and give them more responsibilities. You may even be surprised to discover a hidden talent in one or two of your employees and find that they excel at the tasks you give them.

  • #2 – Consider Outsourcing

If you do not have staff available to help you out, consider outsourcing some of your business activities to free up your time for other high priorities. For example, instead of learning web design and managing your website on your own, think about hiring a web developer. You can find wonderful outsourcing contractors through sites such as eLance, oDesk, and Freelancer.

  • #3 – Use a Time Management System

It can be very easy to get caught up in the crisis of the moment and not get anything done that has to be finished that day. Use a time management system like Franklin or MyLifeOrganized to help you prioritize and clearly define daily tasks.

  • #4 – Make Marketing a Priority

Yes, there are many things that need to be done daily to keep your business running smoothly, but without marketing you will not draw in clients and make sales. A good rule to follow is that at least one-third of your day should be devoted to promoting and marketing your company. Marketing activities can be anything from writing promotional web content articles to attending networking meetings to speaking at your local women's business group.

  • #5 – Take Time for Yourself

If you never allow yourself the time and space to rejuvenate and rebuild your energy, you will eventually run out. Make sure that you take breaks across the day and days off. Make time for your family and friends and do something other than work that you enjoy at least once a week.

Owning and running a small business can be a wonderful way of supporting yourself, but it takes a great deal of work. In fact small business owners usually work far more hours than they ever would if they had a job working for someone else. Above all, make sure that manage your risks with wise decision making and insurance. You can find options at BusinessInsurance.org. With a little bit of time management, willingness to let others take on some responsibility and self care, you will find yourself enjoying the challenge of running a small business even more.
